Carl-Johan Öster, from Sweden, studies at the University Of New Mexico and represent the Lobos Ski Team. This past year was his first year to compete in the NCAA division.
Representing the University of New Mexico Lobos is the greatest thing I have accomplished in my life. The ability to get a great education while competing in skiing has been a huge opportunity. The amount of help you receive from the coaches and teachers is indescribable. The greatest part of being an athlete at the collegiate level is the opportunity to get better in your own sport while actively evolving as person. I meet new friends every day, as all the athletes show great support for each other. Occasionally we even get to practice together with the other teams.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my experience is to travel with the team because we are like a family. You get the chance to discover new places and meet other college students as you travel around to compete against other schools. Last year we had a competition up in Alaska, which was a once in a lifetime experience.
I am having the time of my life right now as I study and compete in college. This has led me to the realization that I could help other athletes to become college students as well and to experience the best time in their life.
